In memoriam: Professor Daniel Danielopolu – from physiology to clinical medicine!
Welcome to the 57th Congress of the Romanian Society of Cardiology. Starting this year, we will celebrate, as part of each congress, one of the outstanding personalities who have contributed to a significant extent to the progress of cardiology in Romania. We will start with Professor Daniel Danielopolu (1884-1955), the one that introduced the use of electrocardiography in Romania, a pioneer in the study of cardiac physiology, as well as the study of physiopathological grounds in heart failure treatment.
This year, as well, the congress will take place over the course of 4 days. The first day is dedicated to courses, 7 of them with various topics: dyslipidaemias, echocardiography, electrocardiography, anticoagulant treatment, arrhythmias, pregnancy and cardiovascular diseases and cardiorespiratory resuscitation.
This year, the congress enjoys the participation of 29 lecturers from abroad, prestigious names in cardiology from Europe and the United States of America. Very significant is the participation, during the opening ceremony and the scientific session organised together with the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), of Professor Barbara Casadei from Great Britain, president of this European Society.
The main novelties of this congress are: (1) increasing the share of interdisciplinary sessions, jointly organised with other professional societies, the Romanian Academy, the Academy of Medical Sciences, as well as with prestigious universities, such as those in Padova, Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca and Târgu-Mureş; (2) encouraging all verbal communications by entering them in competitions concluded with awards; (3) introducing «briefly commented upon papers», meaning short verbal presentations followed by the moderators’ comments, also awarded; (4) selecting the best 40 posters to be moderated upon by experts; (5) introducing «imaging corner» and «hands-on in echocardiography» sessions; (6) introducing the session entitled «The future of my career in cardiology», dedicated to young cardiologists; (7) introducing the session dedicated to medical students. With all these novelties, the Romanian Society of Cardiology attempts to stimulate young cardiologists from both a professional and a scientific standpoint. At the same time, another goal is to augment the interdisciplinary nature of the congress, so as it may become a discussion «forum» among various specialities dealing with the diagnostic and treatment of patients with cardiovascular pathology.
We will continue this year, as well, the tradition of sessions jointly held with the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI), Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA), the Hungarian Society of Cardiology, of «breakfast sessions», also dedicated to young cardiologists, of «live in a box» sessions and sessions of clinical cases commented upon. Another very important element is the session of Reverential Conferences, held by cardiology experts in Romania and dedicated to distinguished patrons of Romanian cardiology. Last but not least, as we do every year, you are invited on Saturday morning to the Cardiologists’ Cross-Country Running.
All these prospects could not have been possible without constant support from pharmaceutical and medical technology companies and the expert team of Media Med Publicis, the organiser of our congress.
